This is one of themany stories that describe how an adolescent feels when he or she is obese. Overweight and obesity are growing problems. These conditions have reached epidemic proportions in the United States and in most industrialized nations around the world. An explosion in the variety and availability of high calorie, high fat convenience foods and the fact that people are exercising less and performing less manual labor have added to the problem. All of the social stigmas involved with being overweight may lead to improper use of aids designed to decrease weight. Once they have decided to lose weight, adolescents, just like adults, want to lose excess weight as quickly as possible and may do so in ways that are not healthy and do not lead to maintenance of weight loss over a long period of time.

At one time or another, almost every teen may appear to be depressed. Usually, the depression is slight and goes away with time. But some kinds of depression need medical intervention. With such an intervention, writing a prescription for Prozac or some other antidepressant drug (Figure 1.1) has become the first order of business. Yet, less than twenty years ago, adolescents were rarely diagnosed as depressed, much less given antidepressants. Today, however, teenagers are now receiving medications almost routinely for symptoms that can hardly be termed “depressive” attention deficit disorder, social anxiety, or drug addiction, for example. Thanks to the “Prozac revolution” of the 1980s and 1990s, a majority of people in America know someone who has used antidepressants. Over 34 million people in the United States have been issued prescriptions for Prozac or another selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). In other words, one American in ten has used Antidepressants.

Although most drugs are developed with altruistic intentions, sometimes drugs are used for purposes other than what the manufacturer had in mind. Such is the case with the drugs Rohypnol ® , gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and ketamine. These drugs were originally developed for specific medical indications, but today are used illegally in drug facilitated sexual assaults in which unsuspecting victims are incapacitated and left unable to resist sexual advances. In recent years, drug facilitated sexual assault has become a growing concern among health and community educators.A number of drugs have become known as “date rape drugs” or “predatory drugs”because they are used to debilitate individuals for the purposes of committing a crime, often sexual assault. Unfortunately, the use of recreational drugs to commit rape is

WHAT ARE DESIGNER DRUGS?
The term designer drug was coined in the mid- to late 1980s when doctors, scientists, and law enforcement agencies noted that, over the past few decades, the number of people who were attempting to illegally synthesize mind altering drugs in underground “clandestine” laboratories was increasing dramatically. These “basement chemists” were taking the chemical structures of known legal drugs, such as the narcotic painkiller Demerol®, and altering them slightly (even by one or two atoms) to produce closely related analogues (molecules with very similar chemical structures). The idea behind this illegal synthesis was to create a “designer drug” that was hundreds or thousands of times more potent than the original legal drug. For a few hundred dollars in chemicals and lab supplies, drug makers and dealers could produce literally millions of dollars’ worth of illegal drugs. Also, since the chemical structure of the drug had been altered slightly, it was still perfectly legal.

Since the dawn of competitive sports, athletes have used enhancement drugs and methods to increase their performance and reach artifi- cially heightened levels of athleticism. Although the past century has seen increased regulation and testing for enhancement drugs, it has also seen an equally increased level of use.Today, enhancement drugs are used all over the world, at all levels of sport, from high school athletics to the highest rungs of Olympic competition. These drugs, however, have gone beyond their traditional role as artificial aids for athletes. They are now used by teenagers and adults alike to increase energy, lose weight, and achieve better-looking physiques. This trend has been reinforced by a society that places an extremely high value on “being number one” and having a “perfect body.” The trend of body enhancement drug use for sports, however, although it seems to be escalating exponentially, is far from new.

We have all felt it,and we probably agree that of all the sensations we are capable of experiencing, pain is our least favorite. Sometimes it’s a shooting pain, like when we step barefoot on a nail or accidentally bite our tongue. Sometimes it comes on very slowly and lingers for hours or days, like a bad sunburn. Or it might hurt only when we move a part of our body, like after we pull a hamstring or sprain an ankle. Still other times, such as during a migraine, the pain comes and goes, with days, weeks, or months between episodes; when it does come, it leaves us almost incapable of functioning. Other than pain, few sensations have generated so many words in the English language to describe them. Pain can be dull, nagging, sharp, burning, aching, searing, gnawing, scalding, stinging, crushing, pulsing, throbbing, pounding, shooting, pricking, stabbing, cramping, wrenching, splitting, unbearable, excruciating, agonizing, blinding, grueling pick your favorite.

Opium (Drugs: The Straight Facts)7
Over the course of human history there have been countless powerful natural and artificial drugs, but none parallel opium in its mythical status, range of uses, and longevity of interest. Indeed, no other drug has had an economic, political, and social influence comparable to opium and its derivatives. Opium is the oldest drug ever cultivated and actively pursued by the human species; it even predates the fermentation of alcohol. The story of opium could fill entire libraries with historical, clinical, and anecdotal information. The story of opium is one of both individual and global conflict. It is a story of alleviating pain and inspiring genius, of addiction, escape, and freedom, of contradictions and mystery. Above all, the story of opium is one of constant mutation within the instability and evolution of human consumption and addiction. The story is as relevant today as it was during the great opium wars of the mid nineteenth century, yet it stretches back into the far reaches of human civilization.

A hallucination is something that we hear, see, smell, feel, or taste that does not really exist. Seeing a refrigerator change into a polar bear and begin walking around the room, or feeling as if your arms and legs have turned into tree limbs, are examples of hallucinations. Hallucinations are commonly experienced by people who suffer from mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Some people with schizophrenia hear voices telling them to do things, when in fact the voices are not real. These hallucinations are often frightening and disturbing. Some people, however, find hallucinations enjoyable and stimulating even life changing spiritual or mystical experiences. They may take mind altering substances collectively known as hallucino- gens or hallucinogenic or psychedelic drugs. Hallucinogens are powerful chemical substances that produce hallucinations of all types. Commonly used hallucinogens include lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), phencyclidine (PCP), magic mushrooms, and peyote. These drugs were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s, and their use continues today.

WHAT IS METHYLPHENIDATE?
Methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin®and Concerta®)is a stimulant drug prescribed to treat hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention in millions of American children. Methylphenidate was first synthesized in the mid 1940s in Europe. In the United States, it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1955. The effects of methylphenidate in the human body are almost identical to those of the amphetamines. Amphetamines the collective name for levoamphetamine (Benzedrine), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine ® ), and methamphetamine (Methedrine or “speed”) are known to be potent psychomotor stimulants. Because of methylphenidate’s potential risk for addiction and abuse, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies it in the Schedule II category of drugs, which includes cocaine, opium, morphine, and other narcotics, and barbiturates all drugs that carry a significant risk of abuse. To be included in the Schedule II category means the DEA must approve how much of the drug can be produced yearly.

Sleep AIDS (Drugs: the Straight Facts) (US$30)
Stationary Office Pages: 106 2005-09 ISBN: 0791082008 2 MB
Sleep: sometimes it seems like a huge thorn in our sides and such a waste of time. It gets in the way of our studying, socializing, and other fun activities like Internet surfing and watching late night movies. Yet, at other times, when we are dog-tired after a long day at school, sleep feels as good as a jump in the pool on a hot summer’s day. Whether we like it or not, sleep is inevitable—we all must sleep, no matter how hard or long we try to fight it. Even birds, other mammals, fish, and insects—most living things—sleep or rest in some way or another. And it’s not just a short nap we need: humans actually spend approximately one-third of our lives (8 out of every 24 hours) sleeping.
WHAT IS SLEEP?
Historically, sleep has been considered a time of mere inactivity for the mind and body to rejuvenate itself. Some philosophers have even considered it a complete waste of time. However, 20th century scientific and medical research into the phenomenon of sleep has revealed that these simplistic views of sleep are not at all accurate.

WHAT IS ECSTASY?
In 1912 the German pharmaceutical company Merck first synthesized and patented a compound called 3,4 methylenedioxymetham phetamine,or MDMA for short. At the time, many new chemicals were synthesized in the hopes that they might be useful in future research. MDMA, as an amphetamine derivative, had potential as a diet drug. However, like many other compounds, research on MDMA was soon abandoned by Merck. Many pharmaceutical companies at that time applied for and received patents on everything they synthesized, just in case the compound was ever found to be useful or in case they ever decided to do more research on the compound. Many of these chemical products, like MDMA, did not show enough promise to be investigated further, and thus research was abandoned.

Inhalants (Drugs: the Straight Facts)
Chelsea House Publications Pages: 112 2004-04 ISBN: 0791076369 3 MB
Given that chemicals in over 1,400 (mainly household) products can be intentionally inhaled for their psychoactive and mind-altering effects, it's not surprising that inhalants are the most commonly abused drug in the United States today, especially among young people. In spite of their popularity, however, very little is known about how these chemicals act on the brain and body. This book provides valuable information on the history of inhalant abuse, the major classes of the most commonly abused inhalants, what scientists currently know about the effects of inhalants on the brain and body, trends in inhalant abuse, and treatment and prevention measures.

Stationary Office Pages: 104 2003-04 ISBN: 0791072622 12 MB
Heroin is a highly addictive drug, and its abuse has repercussions that extend far beyond the individual users. The health and social consequences of drug abuse HIV/AIDS, violence, tuberculosis, fetal effects, crime, and disruptions in family, workplace, and educational environments have a devastating impact on society and cost billions of dollars each year. This is how Alan I. Leshner, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) describes heroin. Yet heroin that is, pure heroin is just a semi synthetic alkaloid (organic substance from plants), a diacetyl derivative of morphine, a white powder as harmless looking as powdered sugar. Street heroin, however, is an entirely different matter, and it is this form of heroin that Leshner is speaking about.

Alcohol surrounds us. It is so much a part of our daily lives that we may not even notice how frequently we are exposed to it directly or indirectly. Beer commercials interrupt our favorite television programs; advertisements for wine pop up in the magazines we read. Billboards promoting a particular brand of liquor are plastered around our sports stadiums. In some states, beer and wine are sold in grocery stores and 24-hour convenience markets next to snacks and soft drinks. Alcohol plays an important role in many celebrations. Champagne is used to toast a bride and groom at their wedding.Family parties may feature beer and wine. New Year’s Eve parties offer the opportunity to mark the end of one year and the beginning of another with a drink in your hand.

Most teens begin smoking for one simple reason: “It makes me look good.”They feel that smoking somehow transforms them into someone tougher, or cooler, or older. In movies, we see our favorite actors and actresses smoking, looking more glamorous, more sophisticated while holding a cigarette. Smoking seems like a quick and easy way to change the way you feel about yourself and the way others feel about you. But smoking is more than just an image, and anyone who has seen a friend or family member struggle with the health problems caused by a lifetime of smoking knows that smokers pay a price for their habit. What we don’t see in the movies are the discolored teeth and fingers, the phlegm (mucus) filled cough, and the rasping voice all of which reveal the true results of smoking.

Cocaine (Drugs: the Straight Facts) (US$30)
Stationary Office Pages: 112 2003-03 ISBN: 0791072606 10 MB
Cocaine is a very addictive drug. Cocaine is a stimulant it directly affects your brain. Cocaine stimulates certain nerve cells in the brain, producing feelings of intense pleasure. Users talk about feeling carefree, or relaxed, or utterly in control. But this artificial stimulation comes with a price tag. The “high” from cocaine lasts only from five to 20 minutes, and you will need more and more cocaine each time you try to match the feelings of that first, initial experience. Cocaine causes severe mood swings and irritability. As soon as cocaine enters your bloodstream it goes to work, increasing your heart rate and raising your blood pressure. It increases your body’s temperature and causes the pupils of your eyes to dilate. Repeated sniffing of cocaine powder causes your nose to become irritated and frequently runny. The cocaine can even eat away at the cartilage in your nose, producing holes.

Hundreds of species of plants contain the chemical substances we call hallucinogens, and have been altering the thoughts, moods, and perceptions of animals and people all over the world for thousands of years. A hallucinogen user may “see” a song, “hear” purple, or hold seemingly coherent conversations with family pets or house plants. A minute can feel like hours, and hours can feel like seconds.A user might become intrigued by a piece of furniture that appears to walk about the dining room, a wall that seems to breathe, or a rainbow of colors that appears streaming from his or her outstretched hand.
